If you have spent any time on social media lately, you have probably come across red light therapy. It is one of those treatments that sounds almost too simple to work, lie under some red panels for a few minutes and walk away with firmer, healthier looking skin. So what is actually going on, and is there anything to it?
The science behind the glow
Red light therapy works by exposing the skin to specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, typically around 630nm. At this wavelength, light penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin and is absorbed by the mitochondria, the energy producing part of our cells. This boost in mitochondrial activity increases ATP production, essentially giving cells more energy to do their job, which includes repairing tissue and producing collagen.
Collagen is the protein that keeps skin firm, plump and elastic. As we age, our natural collagen production slows down, which is part of why skin can start to look thinner, looser and more lined over time. Anything that genuinely supports collagen synthesis is therefore of real interest when it comes to skin health.
What recent research is showing
A study following adults aged 45 to 70 looked at the effects of 630nm red light therapy used for 12 minutes, twice a week, over three months. Participants reported visible improvements in their skin, including a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and sagging, an increase in firmness, improved dermal density, and an overall improvement in skin tone.
What stood out was that these effects were not purely surface level or temporary. The improvements appeared to persist even after the treatment course ended, suggesting that the changes were more structural in nature rather than simply a short term plumping effect from increased blood flow.
It is worth saying clearly that this kind of research, while encouraging, is still part of a growing body of evidence and red light therapy should be viewed as a supportive wellness treatment rather than a medical solution. As always, results vary from person to person.
Why we offer red light therapy
At The Body By Becky, red light therapy sits alongside our other recovery and wellness treatments because it fits so naturally with what we already do. For clients recovering from cosmetic surgery, supporting the skin’s natural repair processes alongside lymphatic drainage massage and hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be part of a really thoughtful, joined up approach to healing.
For anyone simply looking to support their skin’s health and appearance over time, a course of red light therapy is a relaxing, non-invasive way to give your skin a helping hand.
